DOMAINE DES SAUVAIRE
" … and for her
dowry, a vineyard in the region of Crespian".
Marriage contract of Jean Sauvaire – 3rd April
1660.
More than 3 centuries later …
We are still working from the Le Mas de Reilhe as did
our forefathers. Le Mas de Reilhe was built at the end
of the 16th century, enlarged mid-17th century and then
again in 1829. It has always served the agricultural
world (sheep, vines, etc.) as can be seen by the vaulted
barn and the stagecoach relay where the horses were
changed, housing a main building with its two considerable
doorways. The west wing has a square tower with a restored
newel staircase that has semi-circle arched doors surrounded
by a variety of different motifs.
The vines are mainly Mediterranean varieties; they grow
in deep stony (sandstone) land and produce Appellation
d’Origine Controlée wines, “Coteaux
du Languedoc”, aging well with intense colors
and aromas. Our 28-hectare vineyard is sufficiently
diverse to also yield vins de Pays d’Oc, rich
with local flavor.
Crespian is in the Gard (30) department, 20 km northwest
of Nîmes (between Sommières and Alès)
and 30 km from the sea, near the Cévenol foothills
with Mont Aigoual looking down over it from the distance.
The climate, not too wet and not too dry, is well-suited
to vine and grape growing and encourages optimum maturity
with minimum treatment.
